Spandex!
The Miracle Fabric and Its Many Uses
By Aggie Garcia, Fashion Designer & Owner of Illusions by Aggie
Spandex, also
known as Lycra, is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional
elasticity. It is stronger and more durable than rubber. Spandex
was invented in 1959, by DuPont chemist Joseph Shivers. The
invention of spandex changed the clothing industry!
By infusing
Lycra into other fabrics such as cotton, we can have clothing
that is extremely comfortable to wear. Clothing made with Lycra
allows us to have more freedom of movement. This fabric is also
very easy to care for - simply machine wash in medium
temperature water, and medium dry. It is best not to use fabric
softener as it plugs up the pores of the fabric. Clothes will
come out of the dryer virtually wrinkle free, and pack well for
travel.
Spandex is now
used to make all types of athletic clothing, underwear, jeans,
hosiery and daywear. It is also used in the medical field such
as compression garments.
If you look at
clothing tags, you will see a 5% or more infusion of Lycra into
the fabric.
Bathing suits
of the 40's and 50's were made of cotton and wool. The bathing
suits had gathered sides and zippers to make getting them on
easier, and to also keep them tightly in-shape. All bathing
suits today are made of Spandex.
Spandex has
been in existence for 50 years but scientists continue to
perfect it for future use.
