Ruby is the accepted birthstone for July. It is also the accepted anniversary gemstone for the 15th and 40th year.

The finest rubies emanate from Burma. Other areas include Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Tanzania, Cambodia, Afghanistan, India, Russia, and Madagascar. Uncut rubies are easily available and the cut and polished ones are expensive. The highest quality rubies are said to protect their owners from all kinds of misfortune. A fine ruby assured the owner he would live in harmony with his neighbors. It would protect his stature in life, his home and land. Its protective powers were intensified when set in jewelry. Ruby is a stone of abundance and helps to maintain wealth.

Ruby is an excellent energy stone. Ruby is known to sometimes over-stimulate irritable and sensitive people. Ruby is the "heart chakra" stone and balances the heart. This stone is a powerful shield against psychic attack. Ruby detoxifies the body, calms hyperactivity and helps to overcome exhaustion.
